November 4, 2005 13:00 - Todays golf tip
Bankside Lies One shot many golfers have a misconception about is the recovery from an uphill
bank in the rough that fringes the green area. It is really quite a simple shot.
In taking your stance—which is the key to making the shot simple—the golfer
should bend his left knee to compensate for the incline of the slope and should
play the ball just slightly forward of the center of his body. The right shoulder
should be down a bit, but the incline usually takes care of that anyhow.
The golfer should step up to this shot understanding that it is a member of the
chip-shot family. The common error golfers make is to pick the club up steeply on
the backswing and to force the hands quickly up and over on the follow-through,
as though all the stroke required were a punch-scoop delivered with all possible
strength.
What this faulty technique accomplishes is to drive the ball into the bank.
Instead, the golfer should understand that he is playing the stroke correctly
when there is only slight wrist-break action and when the back of his left hand
goes straight out toward the pin, as it does on an ordinary chip. The clubhead
should stay low, merely following the upslope of the bank. The angle of the
clubface provides all the loft that is needed. It is up to the golfer to provide
the delicacy the shot calls for.

November 8, 2005 13:19 - Driving basics
By Brian HallA lot of high handicap golfers can’t actually use a driver.
There are several reasons for this, the main one is they use too little loft. With male golfers it’s a macho thing, they don’t want to use a 12 degree driver because it’s “a bit girlie”. So the macho thing is to go for an 8 degree or 9 degree loft where they can’t actually get the ball in the air and they put too much side spin on it.
This is just one of those times when the golfer has to basically bite the bullet and he has to go for more loft. Why is his three wood good off the tee? Because it’s got more loft.

November 18, 2005 14:40 - Four Keys to Hitting a 460cc Driver
By Kevin M. Downey, President of Innovex Golf Company
The key to hitting the ball farther with the modern driver and golf ball (which
spins much less off of a flat face than balls of the past) is high launch combined
with a low spin rate. Our goal is to get enough spin to achieve lift, while
minimizing (hopefully eliminating) drag. Assuming that you have a driver with
enough loft, here are four things that you can do to increase launch and decrease
spin rate, thus increasing your distance off the tee:
1. Tee the ball higher.
The old adage has always been that the top of the driver should be about halfway up the ball when
it is teed up. However, with a 460cc driver, I like to see you set the ball high enough on a peg such
that the top of the driver is no more than 1/3rd of the way up the ball. Of course, this means that the
standard 2 1/8" tee will not be long enough to accommodate. You will need a tee at least 3" in
length, but likely a little longer than this.

November 23, 2005 12:44 - This weeks Tip
The Short Lofted Pitch
Contrary to the popular notion, most of the pros don't use much
wrist cock in playing their short pitches. For myself, though, I
find I hit the ball sharpest and control it best if I use lots of
wrist and hand action on this type of shot, with the hands
completely un-cocked at impact. I play the ball two inches
forward of the right heel. This requires "early timing," and a
golfer probably is best off to start by playing this shot off the
middle and then to move the ball back when his (or her) timing
develops. My reason for advocating this method is this: the
lowest part of the swing occurs at the center of the stance; in
order to hit the ball first, the turf after, you have to place
the ball back.
In lining up the short pitch, I lay the blade open, very
slightly. I stand with my left shoulder held high, so that it is
free to do its work. (I also have the feeling that my left elbow
is high at address.) I start the club back with my left shoulder
and arm, and halfway through the backswing I begin cocking my
wrists. On this shot I allow for a little roll. For example, on a
40-yard pitch I try to gauge the shot so that the ball will land
about 12 feet short of the hole.
Until next week…good golfing!
